Music-Centered Psychotherapy

Exploring Beyond Words

Also known as insight-oriented music therapy, music-centered psychotherapy focuses on the inner experience of the individual for mental health goals. With music as a gateway and a vehicle, thoughts, memories, and emotions are explored at a deeper level to gain insight, healing, empowerment, and emotional well-being.

Sessions may involve making music, listening to music, examining song lyrics, drawing, and creative writing. Through verbal discussions and reflective processing, the relationship between thoughts, feelings, and actions are explored. Therapeutic insights and new coping skills are then integrated into life. No prior musical training is required.

Music expresses what cannot be articulated, especially when words aren't sufficient in expressing the complex human experience. It has the capacity to reach the deep parts of the psyche. It has a curious and instantaneous ability to connect with and express difficult emotions, uncover thoughts that are usually hidden, and redirect the mind from spiraling into distress. In therapy, this can translate to using music as an outlet for things that have been bottled up, gaining a deeper self-understanding and appreciation, becoming mindful of positive things in the present, and learning new ways to overcome life's challenges without allowing them to overwhelm us.
